Bavarian knife forging
Item number 2 in my DIY Christmas present project is a hand forged cooking knife which I made for my mum, the chef. The blade is made from a file which is a type of hardened steel as well as Walnut for the handle and sheath. One of the workshop technicians was an experienced knife maker and he taught me the ways of forging and sharpening, using our now bald arm hair to test the sharpness. Thanks Max!
The process of forging was really interesting, learning how the malleable metal compresses and stretches and how weak points are created. The sharpening itself is a true art form requiring a steady hand and a sharp eye while passing the blade across the linisher.
